CRC ‘Energy Champions’ league kicks-off

The UK's mandatory climate change and energy saving scheme is due to start in April 2010.
The aim of the scheme is to reduce the level of carbon emissions currently produced by the larger 'low energy intensive' organisations by approximately 1.2 million tonnes of CO2 per year by 2020.
On a practical basis, the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme will affect approximately 20,000 large non-energy intensive organisations. This will include retailers, banks, landlords, supermarkets, hotel chains, restaurant chains, water companies, telecommunications companies, government departments, large local authorities and universities, who account for approximately 10 per cent of the UK's carbon emissions. It is expected that between 4,000 and 5,000 of these businesses will qualify to report under the scheme.
However, it is clear that a significant number of qualifying businesses are still unprepared for monitoring and reporting energy use and do not have a 'CRC team' in place.
What should organisations be doing now? Determining whether the organisation will have to register for the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme.
If a business is required to register - or thinks it may have to register - start gathering the necessary information. This includes details of all electricity consumed from all the half-hourly meter readings the organisation is responsible for (see information on the ServiceInvisible energy monitoring system here.
Check how much electricity the organisation consumed through HHMs during the qualification period. If it is more than 6,000MWh, the firm must register as a participant.
Work out if the business qualifies for the Transport Exemption. The organisation will have to provide this information during the registration process.
Register using the online registry between 1 April 2010 and 30 September 2010.
Begin preparing for the Scheme. Participating companies must register for the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme using the online registry during the registration period. There is a fee for this and there are subsequent annual fees for administration of the account. When participating companies register they will be required to provide information including:
Information on the organisation and its principal subsidiaries
Identification information for the person(s) responsible for the organisation's participation in the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme: A list of the entire organisation's HHM settled on the half-hourly market and total half-hourly electricity used.
